Ø What are the things to keep in mind while preparing a questionnaire? Prepare a short questionnaire [consult your teacher] on the usefulness of TV for improving English. Request 10-15 people to fill up the questionnaire. Analyse the major trends from the responses.
INTRODUCTION;-
It is important to remember that designing a measure, not a conversational inquiry. In general, an answer is valuable in such extent that how the relationship is shown to facts or subjective state according to interest. Good questionnaires maximize the relationship between the answer recorded and the researcher is trying to measure.
FORMATION SERIES OF QUESTIONS
Ø Size;-
The basic question is, what size of the questionnaire is preferable? The size of the questionnaire depends to some extent on the scope of the survey and the number of items to be included.
It is best to use only one side of the form.
Mail questionnaire should be large enough to give space for comments etc.
Ø Quality and co lour of paper;-
Quality and co lour is also an important part of questionnaire. The quality of paper should be good and co lour should be attractive enough that the respondents like to take the questionnaire in his hand.
Ø Arrangement of items on the questionnaire:-
All the questions should be arranged in a logical manner. When a question is depending on other question, it should give a second place. Because well arranged questions gives clear view of the topic.
HOW TO DESIGN A QUESTIONNAIRE?
Ø Focused discussion
Before writing a draft a structured set of questions, it often is valuable to conduct focused discussion in which the questions are not structured fully. There are many ways this can be accomplished.
Such discussion help the research to understand the way people talk about the survey issues, which in turn can help in choosing vocabulary and phrasing questions
Ø Framing Questions
Copies of original survey instruments from any of the major survey organizations also are useful as references. From these questions, the researcher will glean ideas about how specific question are phrased, how to generate standardized questions and to format questionnaires.
Ø Questionnaire Length
It is also difficult to generalize about how long people can be interviewed. The federal office of management and budget has set as a guideline that surveys should takes less than half an hour unless there is compelling reason why more information is needed. However there are many academic surveys that last an hour or longer.
When researchers find that they have more questions to ask than they feel they can ask, there are two choices available. Of course, the researchers simply may cut questions. An alternative approach is to assign subsets of approach increase the complexity of the survey and reduces the precision of estimates of those variables, but may be preferable to leaving out questions altogether.
Ø Determine the topic
Ø How are you going to do it?
Ø What are you going to ask?
Ø Frame hypothesis in your mind about answer
Ø Wording of the questions
Ø Structures
Ø Physical structure
Ø Piloting, Revising, Final Drafts,
1) The researcher’s side of the question and answer process is fully scripted; so that the questions are written fully prepare a respondent to answer questions.
2) The question means the same things to every respondent.
3) The kinds of answers that constitute an appropriate response to the question are communicated consistently to all respondents.
4) Adopt a convention that differentiates between the words that interviewers are to read to respondents and words that are instructed and lower case for questions to be read aloud.
5) Put optional wording in parentheses. Conventions such as (her/his) or (husband/wife) are easy for interviewers to handle smoothly if they are alerted by the parentheses.
6) Check to make sure that all the words that an interviewer has to say are, in fact, written. This includes not only the phrasing of the questions; it also includes transitions, introductions to questions, needed definitions, and explanations.
COCLUSION
Thus, questionnaire is one of the crucial methods of research. It is very easy method of collecting the data. No doubt it has some merits and demerits but if it is designed well than the researcher is able to get the real information.
